George Lutz sues AMITYVILLE HORROR remakers

Fango has learned that George Lutz, whose experiences with his family in the infamous Long Island house inspired both AMITYVILLE HORROR features, has filed suit against the filmakers and production companies/distributors associated with this year’s AMITYVILLE remake. The complaint alleges that the movie, which depicts the Lutz character played by Ryan Reynolds (pictured) going violently insane under the house’s evil influence, “is defamatory per se in that [it] exposes Lutz to hatred, contempt, ridicule and obloquy because it shows him committing various crimes including, but not limited to, premeditated attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, child endangerment, and animal cruelty,” and thus violates terms of an agreement between Lutz and the film’s original producers that the movie would not defame or libel him. Lutz is also suing over breach of contract regarding a box-office bonus payment that was part of his contract with those original producers. The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court June 10; representing Lutz is Larry Zerner, who was FRIDAY THE 13TH PART III’s Shelley once upon a time before becoming an entertainment lawyer and also repped screenwriter Daniel Farrands in his plagiarism suit (settled amicably) against the makers of DARKNESS FALLS. —Michael Gingold

Ireland’s very first horror movie [14 Jun 2005|11:31am]

Night of the Irish Dead

By CALUM WADDELL

DEAD MEAT is Ireland’s very first horror movie—and what a debut it is! This fast-paced story of a small countryside village besieged by the living dead delivers gruesome setpieces by the bucketload—and does so with its tongue placed firmly in its cheek. Probably the most enjoyable low-budget zombie epic since Peter Jackson’s immortal 1993 splatter landmark DEAD ALIVE, DEAD MEAT hits video June 14 on FANGORIA’s GoreZone label through Hart Sharp Video, and horror buffs are in for a rollercoaster ride full of spurting arteries, inventive mayhem and genuinely hilarious situations that do nothing to detract from the onscreen tension. Indeed, on a budget of only $90,000, DEAD MEAT packs in more carnage and entertainment than many genre flicks with umpteen times its budget.

Ruggero Deodato talks CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST 2

Italian director Ruggero Deodato, whose last horror picture was the rarely seen 1993 giallo THE WASHING MACHINE, has revealed to Fango that he is seeking to make a follow-up to his notorious 1980 splatter epic CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST. “I want to do it—I have written two stories,” says the director, who notes that he will be busy until February shooting his new serial for Italian television. “One is a very metropolitan story, like CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST but set in Rome. The other is closer to the original, and set in the jungle. I hope that it will be possible to shoot it, but I don’t know. Just now in Italy, it is not easy to find financing.”

Thankfully, Deodato (who says he has “no idea” when the upcoming American HOLOCAUST DVD is slated to be released) confirms that if CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST 2 does forge ahead, there will be none of the cruelty toward wildlife that helped make the original film controversial. “No—I am finished with that, no more,” he says. “I was stupid to introduce animals.” —Calum Waddell

Me and my dad saw the new Amityville Horror recently and we thought "Hay, why not get the original?".
But then again, I was thinking, what would be the difference between the two.
My dad has seen it before and I asked him this and he said he couldn't remeber anything very different from the new one.

But I'de just think I'de check with you guys. So, is it worrth getting the original?!?!??!

Now it’s DAY OF THE DEAD being remade (?!)

Sad, but inevitable… According to The Hollywood Reporter, a remake of George A. Romero’s DAY OF THE DEAD will be produced by Nu Image/Millennium Films, which will distribute the movie, in partnership with Emmett/Furla Films and Taurus Entertainment. The producers will by Avi Lerner, Randall Emmett and James Dudelson; no other talent has been attached, but it can be assumed Romero will have nothing to do with it. These guys are no strangers to reduxes; Emmett/Furla was part of the team behind the new AMITYVILLE HORROR and is currently involved with updates of THE WICKER MAN and TERROR TRAIN, while Dudelson recently directed and produced the unofficial sequel DAY OF THE DEAD 2: CONTAGIUM. —Michael Gingold
